I recently had lunch with a client who is a high-ranking executive for a national company. We were discussing her company’s mission statement. The number one thing said she focuses on as an executive is really listening to her employees and treating them with respect.
She explained why she felt this was so important with a personal example. Early in her career she had a boss who had listened to her as she explained the difficulties she was having trying to raise a young family and commute to the office every day. The boss made arrangements for her to work at home more often – and this was long before computers and the Internet! She soon became the company’s top producer.
Many years later she got a phone call from her old boss explaining that she was out of work and in need of a job. Not surprisingly, my client hired her and they enjoy a tremendous working relationship at this national company.
So treat everyone you meet with respect. You never know when the tables might turn and you find yourself working for your former employee!
Have a great weekend,
Ro
