The Value of Personal Awareness

I had the chance not long ago to sit down with the Michael Jordan of my industry. He rose to the top of his field from humble beginnings through an unparalleled work ethic and tremendous talent. Along the way, few people got to know him personally as he dedicated his entire focus on excelling in business.

I must admit that although I interacted with him many times over the years, his true nature was a mystery to me. During our recent sit-down, however, I was amazed to find that he opened up and revealed that we had a lot in common. I finally asked him about how different he seemed – how much more comfortable he was at being himself. What caused the change from the stern, all-business guy I had met in the past?

He replied that he had discovered the value of personal awareness – a realization of who he was at his core and what he wanted out of life. Armed with this awareness, he understood that his previous focus had been on chasing things and goals to impress other people. Now, he had shifted his energies to the things he considered important in life, freeing him up to let his true personality shine through even with colleagues.

It seems pretty basic, but humor me for a moment and think about your life. What’s really important to you? Is your life set up to focus on those things? If not, why? What can you do about it? You don’t have to quit your job, buy a boat, and hit the Caribbean tomorrow (although that doesn’t sound like a bad way to go!). Start by identifying the things that are most important to you and then consider small changes to help you pursue them. Maybe you could adjust your work schedule to give you more time with your kids, or use your skills to help a local charity that supports a cause you’re passionate about.

Whatever they are, I can virtually guarantee you that focusing more of your energy and attention on the things that are really important to you will make you happier and less stressed. And who among us couldn’t use more of that?

Have a great weekend,
Ro
